The experiences of Aurorans who went off to fight in the First World War, as well as what life was like for those who stayed at home, will be on exhibit beginning Memorial Day, May 29, 2017 at the Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer. Co-created by the Aurora Historical Society and the GAR Memorial Hall and Museum, the exhibit will feature artifacts from both collections as well as a full-scale replica of a trench which visitors can enter for a sense of what hardships the soldiers encountered from enemy fire, disease and attrition. The opening reception, at which canteen reenactors will serve coffee and donuts, will be held from 10am to 2pm on May 29. The event is free. The city parade steps off at noon and concludes at the reviewing stand in front of the Pierce Center. A pre-parade ceremony will be held at the reviewing stand at 11:30am. After Memorial Day, the exhibit will be open, free of charge, from Noon to 4pm Wednesdays through Saturdays until January 6, 2018. <p>The 1857 Tanner House,made festive for the holidays by volunteer designers, will be open free ofcharge on Sundays and Wednesdays from&nbsp;1-4pm, and on Fridays from&nbsp;4-7pm,through&nbsp;December 29.&nbsp; The house is located at&nbsp;<a href="https://maps.google.com/?q=304+Oak+Avenue&amp;entry=gmail&amp;source=g">304 Oak Avenue</a>&nbsp;in Aurora,60506. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>The gala opening day is&nbsp;Sunday,December 10, when there will be refreshments in the Archives building on theproperty, with photo opportunities using the antique red sleigh from thecollection of the Aurora Historical Society.</p><p>Visitors will be able totour the house on their own, with docents available to answer questions. &nbsp;</p><p>"We think it isimportant to make it possible for families to visit this historic site andenjoy some unplugged time in a Victorian atmosphere," said historicalsociety president Mary Clark Ormond, "so we make it a free event, but Ihave to stress how important&nbsp; donations are to our bottom line.&nbsp; Wehope everyone will lend a hand in supporting the Tanner House and Aurorahistory."</p><p>The house will be closedon Christmas Eve,&nbsp;December 24&nbsp;and New Year's Eve,&nbsp;December 31.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the holiday season the house will be closed until May.</p><p>&nbsp;The annual calendar fromthe Aurora Historical Society will be available at the society's gift shop, TheAurora Shop, at the Pierce Art and History Center,&nbsp;<a href="https://maps.google.com/?q=20+E.+Downer,+60505&amp;entry=gmail&amp;source=g">20 E.
